The Philistines
Maxim Gorky
The performance based on the play by Maxim Gorky is back to the Petersburg stage after a half-century break.
Production

The play by M. Gorky “The Philistines” is making part of the world golden fund of drama. Nevertheless, after the famous performance of Georgy Tovstonogov in 1966, the St. Petersburg theaters did not stage this work. Vladimir Tumanov, the chief director of the Theater on Vasilyevsky decided to break the pause.

The house of Bessemenov, a wealthy tradesman, is always busy and crowded. However, the heroes living under one roof have no peace and harmony among them. Their opinions and goals are dramatically diverging, interests do not coincide, and their love emotions cannot come out. And all this happens in difficult conditions of life-changing moments.

Traditional family values are in crisis, a new generation with a new understanding of life is replacing the old one, conflicts arise between fathers and sons ... The family represents a world that has lost the connection of time.

Attention! The performance contains images of tobacco products and scenes of imitation of smoking!

Performance is the winner of the Stanislavsky Factory Festival (Moscow, 2019)
