The play “Winter” by Yevgeni Grishkovetz has been published long ago and was staged in many theaters of the country.
“Winter” - typical for Grishkovetz talks about nothing and about everything at the same time, incorporated into a plot about soldiers freezing in the forest. The texts of Yevgeni Grishkovetz are very human, warm and sentimental. From the first sight, the play “Winter” consists of familiar sentimental and funny monologues or memories of a boy from his childhood, a boy who dreamed of heroes, victories, glory, military weapons, then found himself in the army, caught and destroyed by the army reality, now remembered about his childhood.
Two soldiers are sent on a winter night to the forest with some sort of secret mission. There is a severe frost, and they have somehow to survive until dawn, not fall a saving and merciless icy sleep. Or maybe everything has already happened to them, they crossed the line and are now free to travel down the memories of childhood, of early joys and disappointments, their impressions of films and books. There comes to them Snegurochka, The Snow Maiden as in children's fairy tale, who later turns out into a school friend, then mother, then a beloved girl. Heroes pour out their souls in monologues, in attempts to understand themselves, to analyze their life. And there come the memories of an unfulfilled, frustrated, stupidly lost love...
Play “Winter” by E. Grishkovetz was awarded with the independent Anti-Booker Prize.
